The Issue
Turkey democratic backsliding has accelerated dramatically. Independent media outlets are being shut down, opposition politicians are being arrested, and civil society organizations face constant harassment and closure. We call on the European Union and Council of Europe to link all partnership agreements with Turkey to measurable democratic benchmarks, provide direct legal support to imprisoned journalists and opposition figures, and establish independent monitoring mechanisms for press freedom and electoral integrity. Democracy does not end at borders. European values must be defended wherever they are threatened.
